Origins & history
Upper Blackrock Spire houses the elite of the Dark Horde and the dragon forces allied with it. Rend Blackhand commands under Nefarian’s shadow, while the fortress’s rookery and military chambers support the black dragonflight’s wider ambitions.
Although commonly listed with Classic dungeons, the original upper spire was a larger group expedition, capped at ten players in late Vanilla. It shares the wider Blackrock Spire structure with the lower dungeon, but its access, enemies and role in progression make it a distinct journey.
Why we enter
The Seal of Ascension opens the way into the upper stronghold. Adventurers come to strike Rend’s leadership and confront General Drakkisath. Their quests connect the spire to Onyxia’s lair and Nefarian’s fortress, so the expedition also acts as a threshold into Classic’s major dragon raids.
The story inside
Pyroguard Emberseer is bound within the opening chambers. The rookery brings the party into conflict with Solakar Flamewreath and the dragon eggs. Goraluk Anvilcrack occupies the forge, while the arena pits the attackers against waves of defenders under Lord Victor Nefarius’s observation.
Rend rides Gyth into the arena battle. Beyond them, the core hound called the Beast guards the route to General Drakkisath. Drakkisath’s defeat breaks the final military barrier and supplies quest objectives used in the raid attunements. Rescuing the wounded dragon Awbee adds a personal consequence to the assault.
Aftermath & legacy
The victory removes the Dark Horde’s warchief and its draconic general, but Nefarian remains above in Blackwing Lair. The later Warlords of Draenor dungeon replaces this occupation with a new force; its bosses should not be confused with Rend, Gyth or Drakkisath.
