Molten Core

A desperate dwarven summoning leaves an elemental tyrant ruling from the mountain’s molten heart.

Origins & history

During the War of the Three Hammers, Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan sought a power great enough to defeat the Dark Iron clan’s enemies. His spell brought Ragnaros into Azeroth. The eruption devastated the surrounding land and created the towering volcanic heart of Blackrock Mountain.

The spell did not give the Dark Irons a servant. Ragnaros enslaved the survivors, and his elemental court occupied the depths below their city. The Molten Core connects the mountain to the Firelands, allowing fire elementals to reinforce their master’s domain. Its origins are a catastrophe of summoning rather than the construction of an ordinary fortress.

Why we enter

The Hydraxian Waterlords enlist adventurers against the Firelord’s servants. Moira’s desire to free the Dark Irons from elemental domination also feeds opposition to Ragnaros. The expedition has both a cosmic and a political objective: weaken the power of fire while breaking the hold of a tyrant beneath the dwarven kingdom.

The story inside

Lucifron and Magmadar guard the early reaches, followed by Gehennas, Garr, Baron Geddon, Shazzrah, Sulfuron Harbinger and Golemagg the Incinerator. Flamewakers, living rock and core hounds make the caverns an elemental court as much as a wilderness. The Waterlords’ campaign against its runes brings the raiders into conflict with Majordomo Executus.

Executus yields after his guards fall and agrees to summon his master. Ragnaros responds to the interruption by killing his own majordomo. The confrontation exposes the nature of his rule before the battle even begins: even faithful service offers no protection from the Firelord’s anger.

Aftermath & legacy

Defeating Ragnaros in the Molten Core banishes him back to the Firelands. It is not his permanent destruction. His later assault in Cataclysm leads to a different raid in his own elemental realm. Within the Classic story, the victory breaks a central source of oppression beneath Blackrock Mountain, while Nefarian’s power still looms above.
