Origins & history
Blackrock Depths is the subterranean home of the Dark Iron dwarves. Its prisons, foundries, tavern and throne room form a functioning city beneath Blackrock Mountain. Emperor Dagran Thaurissan rules there, but his dynasty lives under Ragnaros’s domination, inherited from the disastrous summoning during the War of the Three Hammers.
Ironforge believes Princess Moira Bronzebeard has been taken prisoner by the emperor. That assumption draws outsiders into a dynastic conflict they do not fully understand. The mountain’s struggle against Nefarian and the black dragons supplies a second, larger war around the city.
Why we enter
Different expeditions seek prisoners, relics, access to the Core or the emperor himself. Rescuing Marshal Windsor helps expose Onyxia’s influence in Stormwind. Recovering Moira is presented as another rescue, but the final confrontation reveals that her relationship with Dagran is not the enchantment her father imagined.
The story inside
The detention area and Ring of Law establish the Dark Irons’ coercive rule. Beyond them lie the vault, Fineous Darkvire’s workshops, Lord Incendius’s forge and the military-industrial power of General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach. The Grim Guzzler offers a living social space amid the fighting.
The deeper route passes Ambassador Flamelash, the Seven, the Lyceum and Magmus before reaching Emperor Dagran Thaurissan. Moira fights alongside him. Killing Dagran while sparing her exposes the truth: she loves him and is carrying his heir, making the supposed rescue a personal catastrophe.
Aftermath & legacy
Moira’s grief and her child’s claim reshape dwarven politics long after the expedition. The city also provides the route toward Molten Core, where the power enslaving the Dark Irons can be confronted. This article covers the original sprawling dungeon rather than the later anniversary raid adaptation.
