Blackwing Lair

Nefarian turns the summit into a laboratory for a dragonflight built from the stolen strengths of others.

Origins & history

Nefarian, son of Deathwing and brother of Onyxia, rules the upper reaches of Blackrock Mountain through the Dark Horde and his dragon servants. Below him, Ragnaros commands a rival power. Their struggle for dominance forms the background to the two great Classic raids within the mountain.

Nefarian’s ambition goes beyond holding territory. He experiments with the eggs and blood of different dragonflights to produce chromatic creatures. Blackwing Lair is the protected center of that work: a combination of military headquarters, hatchery and laboratory in which other beings become material for his designs.

Why we enter

Adventurers enter to stop those experiments and remove the ruler supporting the hostile orcs of Blackrock. The red dragon Vaelastrasz has also opposed Nefarian, but the attackers discover that their potential ally has already fallen under his control. The raid turns a campaign against manufactured monsters into a confrontation with the corruption of a protector.

The story inside

Razorgore guards the egg chamber. The attackers must turn his own abilities against the eggs, directly sabotaging the breeding program they came to stop. Vaelastrasz follows in a tragic battle: he lends what help he can even as Nefarian’s control forces him to fight.

Broodlord Lashlayer blocks the suppression rooms, and Firemaw, Ebonroc and Flamegor defend the deeper lair. Chromaggus demonstrates the laboratory’s monstrous results. At the summit, Nefarian first appears as Lord Victor Nefarius before taking dragon form. His manipulation of the attackers’ own combat roles reflects the same desire for control that governs the entire stronghold.

Aftermath & legacy

Nefarian is killed and his head displayed as proof of the victory. This ends his original operation, but not his place in Warcraft’s story. The Twilight’s Hammer later raises him, and Blackwing Descent becomes the setting of his renewed experiments during Cataclysm. The chromatic work in this raid should also be distinguished from the later twilight dragonflight projects.
