The Deadmines — Classic

Stormwind’s unpaid builders turn the mines beneath Westfall into a hidden shipyard. Gryan Stoutmantle’s investigation leads to Edwin VanCleef and the first Defias uprising.

The debt that became a rebellion

Stormwind’s reconstruction should have been the Stonemasons Guild’s triumph. Under Edwin VanCleef, its workers helped restore a capital devastated by war. Instead, the promised payment became a bitter dispute with the House of Nobles. Lady Katrana Prestor — Onyxia in human form — encouraged the division. What began as a conflict over wages grew into a crisis of trust between the people who built the city and those who governed it.

The guild was ordered dissolved. Rioting followed, and Queen Tiffin Wrynn died in the unrest. Edwin escaped the city and built the Defias Brotherhood from embittered workers and other outcasts. Their grievance was real, but their campaign made ordinary people targets too. Robbery and intimidation carried the struggle into the farms and roads of Westfall.

Classic · Following the red bandanas

Beneath Moonbrook, the Brotherhood found room for something much larger than a bandit camp. The Deadmines concealed workshops, a foundry and a hidden harbor: Ironclad Cove. Here, Edwin’s followers prepared an armed juggernaut that could threaten Stormwind from the sea.

Gryan Stoutmantle and the People’s Militia tried to defend Westfall while the kingdom’s attention lay elsewhere. The original investigation sent adventurers between Westfall, Lakeshire and Stormwind, drawing on Wiley the Black and Mathias Shaw’s intelligence. A messenger’s correspondence and a Defias traitor finally led the pursuers to Moonbrook. Entering the mines was the culmination of that trail, not a chance encounter with pirates.

Classic · The ship beneath the mines

The descent exposed an organized war effort. Rhahk’Zor held the first major checkpoint. Beyond him, Sneed operated a shredder in the timber works, and Gilnid commanded the foundry. Lumber, machinery and metal connected the tunnels to the construction taking place deeper underground.

Ironclad Cove revealed the purpose of those workshops. Mr. Smite guarded the approach to the ship, while Captain Greenskin, Cookie and the Defias crew occupied the vessel. Edwin waited aboard with his guards. Adventurers killed him, ending his command and the immediate threat posed by his operation. The dungeon’s industrial rooms and hidden harbor showed just how far the Brotherhood’s rebellion had developed.

Between expeditions · The child who remained

Edwin’s death had a witness: his daughter Vanessa. The victors left the mines believing they had defeated a criminal leader; she remembered the killing of her father. The Saldeans later took in the orphaned girl and raised her as Hope, unaware of her identity.

As Hope Saldean, Vanessa lived close to the people whom Westfall’s recovery had failed. She could feed the hungry while quietly preparing a new Brotherhood. Her father’s name remained hidden until she was ready to turn private grief into a public cause. This is the bridge between the two dungeon eras: the defeat of Edwin did not erase either his daughter or the conditions on which another rebellion could draw.
