Previously · Edwin’s legacy
Years before this expedition, adventurers killed Edwin VanCleef in the Deadmines. His daughter Vanessa survived and was raised by the Saldeans as Hope. The Cataclysm story begins with the next generation of that conflict; the original rebellion and its bosses are covered in the Classic article.
Chapter source ↗Cataclysm · Hope removes the mask
When adventurers returned to Westfall, Lieutenant Horatio Laine was investigating the killings of the Furlbrows. Clues, red cloth and a shadowy figure’s dealings with an ogre pointed beyond an isolated murder. The investigation led through the farms and the desperate communities that had grown around them. The renewed conspiracy was taking shape among people who no longer trusted Stormwind to help.
At Sentinel Hill, Hope revealed herself as Vanessa VanCleef. Her followers seized the initiative and set the settlement ablaze. Gryan Stoutmantle’s victory over the old Brotherhood had not prevented its return. Vanessa had a new leadership and the Deadmines as a stronghold; Stormwind’s defenders now had to follow a familiar route against a different enemy.
Chapter source ↗Cataclysm · A new crew in familiar tunnels
Vanessa’s organization reused the mine’s industrial backbone. Glubtok, an ogre mage recruited for his destructive power, occupied the early works. Helix Gearbreaker brought explosives and rode into battle on a lumbering oaf. In the foundry, the Foe Reaper 5000 turned machinery into another barrier between the intruders and the ship.
The harbor belonged to Admiral Ripsnarl and the new crew. Ripsnarl had once been James Harrington before the worgen curse transformed his life. After his defeat, Cookie emerged with a captain’s title and a cauldron in place of conventional command. Cookie ends the normal-difficulty route. Vanessa’s confrontation belongs to the heroic continuation, so these are not two contradictory accounts of who led the Brotherhood.
Chapter source ↗Heroic · Vanessa’s nightmare
After Cookie’s defeat, Vanessa’s message drew the party into her trap. Poison changed the return journey into a series of nightmares. The adventurers had to escape the foundry and confront distorted scenes associated with the bosses they had already overcome. Vanessa made the mine itself part of her revenge, forcing her pursuers through terror before allowing a final confrontation.
Back aboard the ship, the battle unfolded around explosives and desperate escapes from the deck. Vanessa appeared to die in the final blast. That was the expedition’s apparent ending — a second VanCleef defeated in the same stronghold — but it was not the end of her biography.
Chapter source ↗After Cataclysm · An ending reconsidered
Legion later revealed that Vanessa had survived. Her neurotoxins had helped deceive her enemies about her death. She reappeared in the rogue campaign and became involved with the Uncrowned, carrying the VanCleef story beyond the mines.
The two expeditions therefore form a continuous history. Edwin turned a broken bargain into an armed rebellion; Vanessa inherited both the grievance and its consequences. Clearing the stronghold stopped particular leaders and plans. It did not, by itself, resolve Westfall’s struggle with hunger, abandonment and distrust. Later appearances of Vanessa belong to that continuing personal story rather than a third version of the Cataclysm encounter.
