Loken’s fall began within a relationship the keepers should have been able to trust. He grew close to Sif, the wife of his brother Thorim. When she ended their affair, he killed her. The crime left him terrified of what his brother would discover.
An apparent vision of Sif offered a way to conceal the truth. Behind it was Yogg-Saron, turning grief and fear into instructions. Loken blamed the frost giants, and Thorim’s revenge deepened the divisions the lie had created.
Thorim eventually withdrew in despair. Loken had escaped immediate exposure, but the price was dependence on the prisoner beneath Ulduar. Protecting his secret became more important to him than protecting the world.

A Prison Without Jailers
Mimiron noticed abnormalities among the titan-forged and began to investigate. Loken sabotaged his workshop before that inquiry could expose him. Mechagnomes saved the inventor’s spirit in a mechanical body, but the attack removed a threat to Loken’s control.
Other keepers were subdued by force. Freya was overcome, and fire giants helped bring down Hodir’s defenses. Yogg-Saron imposed his will on guardians who had once helped secure his imprisonment.
Loken took command while Ulduar closed itself away. Its halls, gardens and workshops remained, giving the place the outward appearance of continuity. What had disappeared was the independence of the beings entrusted with its purpose.
