Beneath the Barov family estate, the Cult of the Damned teaches the craft that helped destroy Lordaeron.
Origins & history
Caer Darrow was the seat of the wealthy Barov family. Their desire to preserve fortune and power led them into a bargain with Kel’Thuzad and the Cult of the Damned. The estate’s underground chambers became Scholomance, a hidden school for necromancers before the Scourge openly devastated Lordaeron.
Experiments consumed servants and townspeople. The Barovs received undeath instead of the secure immortality they imagined, while the island’s dead remained trapped in the consequences of the bargain. The school matters because it trains the people who maintain the Scourge: its classrooms turn cruelty into a repeatable discipline.
Why we enter
Adventurers enter to confront the school’s masters, disrupt its instruction and help the victims who still haunt Caer Darrow. The struggle also touches the Barov inheritance and the fate of Eva Sarkhoff and her husband. Their suffering makes the academy more than an anonymous storehouse of undead monsters.
The household beneath the academy
Lord Alexei Barov’s bargain and Eva Sarkhoff’s testimony describe the same disaster from opposite sides of the household. One concerns an owner seeking to preserve his position; the other follows servants hiding from the consequences. The school’s vaults and laboratories occupy the home they once shared.
Entering Scholomance therefore joins two tasks: confronting Darkmaster Gandling’s institution and responding to the suffering it left behind. The Cult of the Damned gained more than a building when it acquired the estate. It gained a place where its practices could be taught and repeated.
The story inside
The Classic complex contains laboratories, crypts and lecture rooms rather than a single ceremonial throne. Kirtonos the Herald can be summoned; Jandice Barov uses illusions, Rattlegore embodies the school’s bonecraft, and Ras Frostwhisper represents its lich mastery. Vectus and Marduk Blackpool occupy the viewing room.
The inner chambers contain Doctor Theolen Krastinov, Lorekeeper Polkelt, Instructor Malicia, Lord Alexei and Lady Illucia Barov, and the Ravenian. Confronting these guardians opens the final encounter with Darkmaster Gandling. Together the encounters expose the institution’s range: experimentation on bodies, enslavement of spirits and the training of new necromancers.
Aftermath & legacy
The original expedition confronts the school’s masters and answers the pleas of its victims. It does not establish that every trace of the institution has vanished.

The Cult of the Damned needed places where its work could proceed unseen. The Barov family’s bargain with Kel’Thuzad supplied one beneath their home at Caer Darrow. The promise of immortality opened the estate to a power its owners would not control.
The underground chambers became Scholomance. What had belonged to a noble household now served the training of necromancers. Alexei Barov himself became an undead servant rather than an independent beneficiary of the bargain.
The academy tied private ambition to the approaching public catastrophe. The plague was not simply a force arriving from outside the kingdom: its servants had already gained shelter within Lordaeron’s own institutions and estates.
At Caer Darrow, Eva Sarkhoff told a story hidden behind the academy’s reputation. She and Lucien had survived in hiding before discovery delivered them to Krastinov’s experiments. Even death had failed to free them from the estate.
Her request gave the adventurers a task beyond reaching Gandling: attend to the remains of the people whom the school had used. Within Scholomance, the fight against necromancy therefore included an attempt to give its victims an ending.
The expedition’s enemies were not only the undead occupying its rooms. Living practitioners maintained the institution that had made the suffering possible. Confronting the headmaster struck at that continuing work, while Eva’s plea kept the household’s lost servants at the center of the story.
