Origins & history

The monastery predates the Scarlet Crusade. It was a center of Lordaeron’s religious scholarship, prayer and training, associated with the Church of the Holy Light. After the Third War, surviving defenders of the kingdom sought secure bases from which to fight the undead. The monastery became one of the Crusade’s strongest positions.

The order’s mission hardened into persecution. Non-humans and strangers were treated as enemies or possible carriers of the plague, whatever their actual allegiance. Its priests retained the ability to wield the Light; the horror of the place lies partly in the fact that conviction and sacred power do not guarantee compassion.

Why we enter

The Crusade threatens the Forsaken and other travelers throughout the ruined kingdom. Adventurers enter its four Classic wings to confront its military and religious leadership. For the Forsaken, this is a struggle against an organization dedicated to their destruction; other opponents also have reason to resist its imprisonment, torture and indiscriminate violence.

The story inside

The Graveyard contains Interrogator Vishas and Bloodmage Thalnos, setting the monastery’s treatment of prisoners beside its disturbed dead. In the Library, Houndmaster Loksey and Arcanist Doan defend the order’s knowledge. Herod presides over the Armory, embodying the force with which that doctrine is imposed.

The Cathedral brings the story to Scarlet Commander Renault Mograine and High Inquisitor Sally Whitemane. Her resurrection of the fallen commander turns a place of worship into a demonstration of their shared power. These are four connected wings of one stronghold.

Aftermath & legacy

The Mograine family tragedy reaches this chapel in the Ashbringer comic: Darion brings the corrupted blade, and Alexandros’s spirit exacts vengeance on Renault for murdering him.
