The quel’dorei share an ancestry with the blood elves but retain a separate identity.

The Scourge’s invasion shattered the high elven kingdom of Quel’Thalas. Most survivors took the name blood elves, while a minority retained the older identity and different allegiances. High elves and blood elves are not separate biological peoples; the distinction grew from political choices, beliefs, and the response to a shared catastrophe.
