The Scourge devastated Quel’Thalas and destroyed the Sunwell. The survivors adopted the name blood elves in memory of the fallen and searched for ways to endure their dependence on magic.
Kael’thas returned to a homeland that needed a leader while he was still grieving his father. Arthas had destroyed its defenses and used the Sunwell to restore Kel’Thuzad. The sacred source that had sustained the elves was now a danger to them.
The prince chose to destroy the corrupted font. It was an act of preservation that looked like another loss: the survivors would no longer be poisoned through it, but they had also lost the magic on which generations had depended.
They called themselves blood elves in remembrance of the fallen. The name gathered their grief into a shared identity, while the emptiness left by the well created a need Kael’thas would spend the rest of his life trying to answer.
Fighting beside the remnants of Lordaeron’s army did not give Kael’thas secure allies. Garithos distrusted the elves and left them facing the undead with inadequate support. When Vashj offered help, refusing her meant risking the soldiers he was trying to keep alive.
Accepting naga assistance became the charge used against him. Garithos imprisoned the prince and his followers in Dalaran and condemned them. Vashj returned to free them and offered a different prospect: Illidan might have an answer to their hunger for magic.
Kael’thas followed her into Outland. His new allegiance grew from that escape, but it did not remove his dependence. The promised cure was instead a way of finding more magic to consume, binding the prince’s hopes to another ruler’s power.
