The Dark Portal Opens

Medivh, carrying the hidden influence of Sargeras, made contact with Gul’dan. The warlock’s people had exhausted their own world through conquest and corruption; Azeroth offered new lands and enemies.

Their work opened the Dark Portal, joining Draenor to Azeroth. What appeared to the defenders as an invasion from outside also depended on a betrayal within their own world. The Guardian entrusted with protection had helped create the road for the attack.

The Apprentice and the Tower

Khadgar arrived at Karazhan hoping to learn from Medivh. Earning a place required practical work as well as magical talent, and the tower itself presented unsettling visions that did not belong to the present.

The arrival of Garona challenged his assumptions about the enemy beyond the tower. Distrust gave way to cooperation as they faced danger together and compared what they knew. Their questions began to point toward the man who had admitted them both.

Khadgar’s investigation revealed a connection between his master and the Horde’s arrival. The education he had sought now required a decision about loyalty: protecting his teacher meant ignoring a danger to everyone outside the tower.

The Master Behind the Gate

Khadgar and Garona escaped to bring their discovery to Lothar. He returned with them to confront his old friend Medivh in Karazhan. The source of the invasion was also a man they had trusted.

The Guardian’s magic overwhelmed them and drained Khadgar’s youth. The apprentice nevertheless drove a blade into his master; Lothar delivered the final stroke as Sargeras tried to emerge. Medivh’s death ended the possession, not Sargeras’s existence.

Gul’dan, searching inside Medivh’s mind, fell into a coma when the link was broken. Beyond the tower, the Horde remained in Azeroth. Stopping the architect of the betrayal could not undo an invasion already in motion.

A Way Out of Lordaeron

After leaving Arthas at Stratholme, Jaina faced the collapse of the country around her. Remaining in Lordaeron offered no clear way to protect the people who had survived. The prophet’s warning proposed something the established leaders had refused: cross the sea to Kalimdor.

Jaina gathered survivors and followed that advice. Antonidas did not make the same choice. Their separation marked the end of a relationship in which she could depend on her teacher to determine the course ahead.

The stranger who had urged the journey was Medivh. His guidance would bring the refugees into contact with other peoples resisting the Legion. The departure gave Jaina a responsibility that would outlast the war: finding a future for the people who had followed her.
