The Legion Invades Kalimdor

The Burning Legion poured into Kalimdor through the portal at the Well of Eternity. Cities and armies fell before the invasion, while the resistance gathered around those who refused to follow Azshara. Malfurion Stormrage’s druidic training offered a different relationship with the world from the arcane ambitions of the royal court.

The war drew together night elves, dragons, and the powers of the wild. Tyrande’s service to Elune and Illidan’s hunger for magical strength led the Stormrage brothers and their closest companion along increasingly different paths. Their struggle would outlive the invasion and shape the later history of the night elves.

The Great Sundering

The final struggle at the Well ended the Legion’s invasion, but the collapse of its unstable power broke ancient Kalimdor apart. Seas rushed into the devastation, separating surviving lands and leaving the Maelstrom where the heart of the empire had stood.

Victory therefore marked the end of an entire world order. The survivors inherited scattered homelands instead of one continent, and the memory of Azshara’s reign became a warning about magical ambition. The landscapes encountered in later Warcraft history are inseparable from this catastrophe.

The Prison Opens

With the Burning Legion advancing through Kalimdor, Tyrande sought more than soldiers. She needed someone who understood the enemy. Deep beneath the forests she turned toward the prison of Illidan, the man her people had confined for millennia.

Malfurion opposed her decision. He remembered what his brother’s pursuit of power had cost and did not believe a new crisis had made him safe. Tyrande acted despite that warning, fighting past the guards and opening the prison.

Illidan accepted the fight against the demons for Tyrande’s sake, not out of renewed loyalty to the society that had imprisoned him. His release also created another enemy: Maiev would return to find her prisoner gone and Watchers dead. The rescue that gave the defenders a weapon began a pursuit that would last beyond the war.

The Price of the Skull

In Felwood, Illidan encountered an unexpected guide. Arthas, already a death knight, pointed him toward the Skull of Gul’dan. The Legion was using the relic’s power, and taking it would give Illidan the means to challenge Tichondrius.

Illidan chose to absorb that power. His body changed, taking on the wings, horns and hooves of a demon. With his new strength he destroyed Tichondrius, dealing a serious blow to the invasion. Arthas had helped turn one of the Legion’s weapons against its own commander.

For Illidan, victory proved the value of his methods. Malfurion saw the transformation as another surrender to corruption and banished him. The brothers agreed that the demons had to be stopped; they could not agree on what could be sacrificed to do it.

An Eye Turned North

Kil’jaeden demanded the destruction of Ner’zhul, whose disobedience had made the Lich King a threat to his former master. Illidan accepted the task. The memories taken from the Skull gave him a route to a weapon powerful enough to attempt it.

With Vashj’s naga, Illidan entered the Tomb of Sargeras and claimed the Eye. Maiev followed him inside, but his escape left her companions trapped in the collapsing tomb. Her pursuit became inseparable from those losses.

At Dalaran, Illidan directed the Eye’s power toward Icecrown. The ritual threatened the land around the Frozen Throne as well as its prisoner. Malfurion, Maiev and Kael’thas intervened before the attack could finish. The artifact was destroyed and Illidan’s promise to Kil’jaeden remained unfulfilled.

A Rescue Before Exile

Tyrande had been swept downriver while protecting refugees from the Scourge. Maiev told Malfurion that she was dead, keeping him focused on capturing Illidan. Kael’thas revealed that her fate was not certain.

Illidan offered to help find her. His naga searched the river and the brothers worked together against the undead to reach her. For a moment, saving someone they both loved mattered more than the judgment waiting between them.

Malfurion allowed Illidan to leave after the rescue, without absolving him of his actions. Illidan opened a portal to Outland to escape Kil’jaeden’s punishment. Maiev followed him through. The separation ended neither her hunt nor the demon lord’s claim on him.

An Alliance Broken

Fighting beside the remnants of Lordaeron’s army did not give Kael’thas secure allies. Garithos distrusted the elves and left them facing the undead with inadequate support. When Vashj offered help, refusing her meant risking the soldiers he was trying to keep alive.

Accepting naga assistance became the charge used against him. Garithos imprisoned the prince and his followers in Dalaran and condemned them. Vashj returned to free them and offered a different prospect: Illidan might have an answer to their hunger for magic.

Kael’thas followed her into Outland. His new allegiance grew from that escape, but it did not remove his dependence. The promised cure was instead a way of finding more magic to consume, binding the prince’s hopes to another ruler’s power.

The Enemy of My Enemy

Outland offered Illidan distance from Azeroth, but not safety. Maiev captured him there before Vashj and Kael’thas intervened. The blood elf prince pledged his people’s service in exchange for help with their hunger for magic.

The shattered world already had a ruler. Magtheridon drew demonic reinforcements through portals and held Black Temple. Illidan’s forces closed those routes and joined Akama, whose people wanted the sanctuary taken back from its occupier. Together they defeated the pit lord.

Illidan claimed the victory as lordship over Outland. Akama would discover that removing Magtheridon had not restored his people’s freedom. Nor had conquest concealed Illidan from Kil’jaeden: the demon lord found him and demanded another attempt against the Frozen Throne.

The Ascent to the Frozen Throne

The weakening Ner’zhul called Arthas back to Northrend. Illidan and his allies were moving against the Frozen Throne, and the death knight could no longer assume that the power sustaining him would endure. Reaching Icecrown became a race to preserve his master and himself.

Anub’arak offered a route through the fallen nerubian kingdom. The former king guided Arthas through tunnels haunted by the consequences of the Scourge’s conquest. For Arthas the passage was a shortcut; for Anub’arak it was the ruin of the realm he had once ruled.

At Icecrown, Arthas overcame Illidan and climbed to the prison above. He broke the ice and put on the Helm of Domination, joining himself to Ner’zhul as the Lich King. The prince who had taken a cursed blade to save his people now sat at the center of the power that had destroyed them.

Illidan survived the duel. Vashj and Kael’thas brought him back to Outland, where the failure left him preparing for Kil’jaeden’s wrath. Arthas gained a throne; his opponent returned to a kingdom that could not make him safe.
