Before the Third WarA People Beyond the Walls
The captive orcs were not the army Thrall had imagined. Many seemed to have lost the will to resist. Breaking their walls would not be enough if they no longer believed there was a life worth claiming outside them.
Grom Hellscream and the Warsong showed him that some orcs remained free. Grom recognized the meaning of his family’s cloth, directing him toward the Frostwolves. There Drek’Thar taught Thrall about his parents and the traditions abandoned in the Horde’s pursuit of demonic power.
Shamanism offered a form of strength unlike the domination he had known. The elements could be asked for aid, not compelled as captives. When Thrall returned to the imprisoned orcs, that connection would help him restore hope as well as open gates.

The Hammer and the Burden
Orgrim Doomhammer tested Thrall before revealing who he was. The young orc’s refusal to accept a life of hiding convinced the former warchief that he had found an ally. Together with the Frostwolves and Warsong, they began freeing the camps.
Thrall entered among the prisoners and rekindled their confidence, showing them that the old spiritual traditions had not vanished. The campaign gave the orcs a reason to act together again. It also cost them Orgrim, mortally wounded during the fighting.
The dying leader entrusted Thrall with his armor, the Doomhammer and command. Thrall had sought his own freedom; now the safety of others rested on his choices. He carried the inheritance toward the fortress where his captivity had begun.

The Road to Kalimdor
A mysterious prophet warned Thrall that a greater invasion was coming and urged him to lead the Horde west. The journey required more than leaving the camps behind. The orcs were abandoning the lands where their last war had ended to seek a future they could not yet see.
On the voyage they encountered the Darkspear trolls. Sen’jin’s death left his people in need of escape, and Thrall offered them a place with the Horde. Reaching Kalimdor brought another alliance when he helped Cairne Bloodhoof’s tauren withstand centaur attacks.
These encounters changed the meaning of the Horde. It was becoming a refuge for peoples joined by need and chosen loyalty, not only an orcish army. Cairne helped Thrall seek the oracle in Stonetalon, where the reason for the journey would finally become clear.

The Last Debt to Mannoroth
Grom could not master the returning bloodlust as the Legion drew near. Sent to establish a settlement, the Warsong clashed with the defenders of the forest. He drank Mannoroth’s blood again to gain the strength to kill Cenarius, binding his followers to the demon once more.
Thrall learned what had happened while meeting Jaina at the oracle’s summons. Their peoples had fought for years, but neither could defeat the invasion alone. Together they subdued Grom and freed him from the immediate grip of the corruption.
Thrall and Grom then confronted Mannoroth. The pit lord expected the old bargain to decide the encounter, but Grom struck him down. The blast killed Grom too. His last act broke the blood curse, giving the orcs a freedom that opening the prison camps had not been able to provide.
