Three occupied districts reveal the long decay of Eldre’Thalas and the terrible bargain sustaining its surviving Highborne.
Origins & history
Dire Maul is the ruined Highborne city of Eldre’Thalas, once a center of arcane learning in Feralas. The Shen’dralar survived the Sundering, but separation from the Well of Eternity left them seeking another source of magical sustenance.
Prince Tortheldrin and his followers imprisoned the demon Immol’thar and siphoned its energy. As that arrangement grew harder to sustain, the prince killed many of his own people to preserve power for the rest. Their retreat left large parts of the city open to satyrs, hostile growth and Gordok ogres.
Why we enter
Adventurers enter for different reasons in each wing: stopping the corruption of the gardens, investigating the Shen’dralar’s secret and confronting the ogre king. The surviving library preserves knowledge even inside this compromised sanctuary. Dire Maul’s three wings are distinct routes through the same city’s decline.
The story inside
In the east, Pusillin’s chase, Lethtendris, Hydrospawn and Zevrim Thornhoof lead toward Alzzin the Wildshaper and the corrupted Felvine. Freeing Old Ironbark from the sacrifice ritual opens the deeper path.
In the west, Tendris Warpwood, Illyanna Ravenoak and Magister Kalendris stand among ruined defenses. Disabling the crystal pylons allows the party to fight Immol’thar; depriving Tortheldrin of the demon’s power draws the prince into the final confrontation.
In the north, the guards and Captain Kromcrush protect King Gordok and Cho’Rush the Observer. The tribute route offers another approach: bypassing or sparing key servants before defeating the king results in the survivors acknowledging the victors’ authority.
Aftermath & legacy
The death of Tortheldrin breaks the arrangement that sustained the remaining Shen’dralar. The eastern corruption, western demon prison and northern ogre court are all covered here rather than represented as three unrelated cities.
